Filed under: Home Improvement Management @ 12:20 pm

The X-mas season is a very special time to spend with family and we all want it to be as marvellous as possible - a notable portion of the Christmas tradition is having a merrily adorned dwelling to tip your hat to the Christmas season. More often than not houses end up having loud decorations and Xmas lights arranged around a wilting tree. Go online have a look through the John Lewis web site and put the fizz back into Christmas.

At Christmas time the dominant of nearly every rooms is the Xmas tree - lovingly decorated with Christmas lights, tinsel and treats, hovering above the omni coloured presents below; it is the main feature almost all 2 focus on when they enter the house and that is the main reason you will certainly like it to turn out being great. Selecting your Xmas tree lights from the great items currently for sale on the John Lewis website could not be more straightforward - straightforward navigation at the left hand side and at the top of every web page makes the task of navigating through to the specific decoration you want to purchase totally painless.

Obviously, when you have chosen your tree - in addition to the lights to accompany it - you will almost defiantly like to pick a cluster of ornaments for the rest of your house. These decorations could well come in the form of Christmas lights, hanging ornaments or baubles to name but a scattering. Battling through the X-mas shoppers to pick these decorations out could turn out to be a real chore and the extra expense of delivering the goods from some other web-sites could well change that awesome price you perceive to a thing more like what you could find on your local high street. Transform your tree into something special with Xmas tree lights from John Lewis.

Never fear - at John Lewis you’ll not just avoid the hassle of the Christmas crowds by buying from the relative privacy of your own house, but you will also receive free normal home delivery on all your orders - with next day home delivery available to you if you should be in a big rush. Not only that but absolutely free returns are also available to you, so you can really buy in total confidence. So why not let John Lewis help make this X-mas a very special one.

Help Choosing Door and Window Hardware.

Filed under: Home Improvement Management @ 12:48 pm

Who would be the best person to help you find suitable fixtures
and fittings for doors and windows? Architects are trained to
create designs that are structurally sound, functional, and
aesthetically pleasing. They also often have a basic knowledge
of construction materials, though not the detailed knowledge
required when choosing appropriate hardware. Interior designers
specialize in the decorating and furnishing of rooms and can
offer fresh, innovative ideas and advice, but will be
concentrating on the appearance rather than how the fittings
work. Maybe a blacksmith or metal worker would be the person to
ask.. No, a joiner is the best person to give advice.

Joiners understand what is needed, they have made doors and
windows and know ho big a hinge would be needed to hold the
weight of a solid oak door, or which lock would fit properly and
safely in rebated french windows.

Advise is needed when ordering and choosing door knobs; perhaps
one of the most complex pieces of door hardware to order. When
choosing knobs you have to consider so many things, the knob
needs to be far enough away from the door so that you don’t
scrape your knuckles, seems obvious, but many people don’t think
about it until too late. A knob may not be a possibility if
there is already a hole in your door that is too close to the
edge. Knobs are sprung in different ways too; heavier knobs have
stronger springing, lighter ones lighter springing. The weight
of springing must match the weight of springing on the latch or
lock you intend to use on the door, if the knob and lever are
ill matched the knob will either be too hard to turn or won’t
spring back.

Door thickness can cause problems these days, as doors are being
made much thinner; this has to be taken into consideration when
choosing all kinds of door hardware. If door hardware has been
chosen to suit an older thicker door, it may mean having to
shorten solid pieces of metal by cutting, not something you
would necessarily be able to do yourself at home. Advice is
often needed, as good quality hardware can be expensive. You
need to get the right thing, before cutting holes in your
precious doors and windows.

Architectural Ironmongery Ltd is run by trained joiners with
over getting on for 90 years of joinery knowledge and experience
between the three of them. The company specialises in giving
educated knowledge about products as well as selling our
products. They don’t want returns because customers have ordered
the wrong thing for the job, when all that was need was a few
minutes talking to an expert. They are happy to discuss
restoration projects with their customers, giving advice when
necessary. The retail and mail order business is based in
Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire, England, but ships worldwide and has
a huge amount and variety of hardware in stock. If you email
they are more than happy to ring you, saving your phone charges,
especially if you are out of UK.

Grocery Coupons And Food Secrets

Filed under: Home Improvement Management @ 8:43 pm

How can grocery coupon cost you more than they save? When is whole wheat not really whole wheat? Why are some frozen foods better for you than fresh foods? Should you buy the small or large bananas? Read on for the answers.

Grocery Coupons

Coupons are designed to get you to buy something you weren’t planning to buy. If the things you buy with them don’t replace more expensive options, you spend even more instead of saving money. To save money with them, then, you should use them for products you regularly buy, or to try new brands that are similar in price to what you already use.

Some stores still offer to double the value of your coupons on given days or for temporary promotions. The key to saving money in these cases is to use as many coupons as you can, and buy the smallest sizes of the product that the coupons allow. This will almost always get you the lowest unit-cost.

For example, if you have a coupon for 50 cents off on dish detergent, and the store is doubling your coupons, you’ll get 1 dollar off. If you buy the 38-ounce size, priced at $2.19, it will cost you $1.19, or 3.1 cents per ounce. However, if you buy the 18-ounce size, priced at $1.19, it will cost you only 19 cents! That’s just a bit over a penny per ounce, or one third the cost. Sometimes you can even get a 99-cent item for free with a doubled 50 cent coupon.

Other Grocery Store Secrets

Read the labels and you’ll see that sugar is showing up in almost everything. Most recently, it has been added to most brands of kidney beans, which used to be packed in just water and salt. Why? For the same reason it is added to peanut butter and many other products that don’t need it for taste - it is cheap. Cheaper than the other ingredients, in fact. Due to government subsidies, there is so much cheap sugar that growers need to dump it into as many products as they can.

You will also notice that almost all packaged products have hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oil in them. This is the stuff that is used to give mice heart disease when scientists want to study that disease! Fortunately, due to consumer demand, some brands, like Doritos, have stopped using it in some of their products. It is still in well over half of all packaged products, though.

Whole wheat is only whole wheat if it says exactly that. “Wheat flour,” “unbleached wheat flour,” and “wheat,” all just mean some variety of processed white flour. “Wheat” bread is nothing more than white bread with enough whole grain thrown in to color it. “Wheat blend” pasta is yet another trick to make you think you’re buying whole wheat.

Frozen fruits and vegetables, when tested against “fresh” fruits and vegetables, usually have more vitamin content. It makes sense. They are flash-frozen shortly after being picked, while the “fresh” foods are in trucks for days, exposed to heat and air. Then they sit at the grocery store for days, then in your refrigerator for days. Buying frozen fruits and veggies, then, can be healthier, and they are even cheaper at times, like when the particular fruit or vegetable isn’t in season.

Grocery coupons aren’t the only way to save money buying food. Store brands are often substantially cheaper, and guess what? Often they are really the name brands in disguise. Read the label and you may see something like, “Packed for ABC Grocery Stores by Kraft Foods, Inc.” In any case, you can try the store brands, and if you can’t tell the difference, why pay more?

Finally, what size bananas, eggplant and other fruits or vegetables should you buy? If they are sold by the piece, buy the biggest, to get the most for your money. If they are sold by the pound, buy the smallest. You’ll still eat one banana at a time for a snack, right? The small ones might be half the price of the large, saving you money with every snack. When it comes to saving money shopping, there is more to it than grocery coupons.

(New construction windows or replacement windows? Which is right for you?)

Filed under: Home Improvement Management @ 12:23 am

(New construction windows or replacement windows? Which is
right for you?)

Hello, my name is John Rocco.I grew up around the window and
door business. My father owned a glass shop that dealt in every
aspect of residential and commercial glass.Naturally, when it
came time to choose a profession, i wound up in the window and
door business. I have been in the business for about 27 years,
and i have been self employed for 20.One of the things that
seperated my company from my competitors was my willingness to
show my customers how to replace their windows themselves.
Whenever i would encounter a customer with a curiosity or
willingness to learn how to install their own windows,i would
offer to sell them the labor on one window, using them as my
helper. Then, they would install the rest of the windows using the
knowledge gained from helping me install one. Most window
companies would never do this because there is so much money
made on the labor. But i was always so busy,i never felt like it
was costing me money.Eventually, i made an installation video
for those homeowners who wanted to do their own windows. While
the video is for sale on my website, i decided to take excerpts
from the video and write an article once a week covering some
part of the window replacement project. This article is going to
cover the difference between window frames used in new
construction homes, and the window frames that are used to
replace existing aluminum or wood windows.

When a new home is being built, the windows are nailed to the
wood studs that make up the house frame. In order to accomplish
this, new construction windows have a fin around all four sides
of the frame that rests against the outside of the stud, and
nails are driven into the studs through the nailing fin. After
that, flashing paper is applied to prevent water leaks, then the
exterior, material is applied. That material can be stucco,
brick, siding, etc. Now, imagine 10 or 20 years later when you
want to replace those windows. If you were going to install your
replacement windows the same way the original windows were
installed, you would have to remove the exterior material around
each window in order to get to those nails holding the frame in
there. You can see how this pro- ceedure could cause many
problems, not to mention all the labor involved. I have seen
homes in california with stucco exteriors where the homeowner
had the stucco cut out in order to remove the old windows. The
problem was they were unable to match the stucco colors after
patching. Its just not a very efficient way to replace windows.
So the replacement frame was designed. In most parts of the
country it’s simply a new construction window frame with the
nail fin removed. In the west, where stucco is a common home
exterior,a retrofit frame was designed. If you’re going to be
replacing the exterior material on your home, then you might
want to consider going with the new construction window since
the nailing fins will be exposed anyway. Also, chances are that
a contractor will be doing your exterior replacement, and it
would be wise to let the contractor install the windows as
well.Since my installation videos deal with window replace- ment
only, these articles will focus on replacement frames and
retrofit frames. Using these two frame styles,a do it yourselfer
can replace their old windows without any damage to existing
interior and exterior surfaces. And the job can be done using
common tools such as a drill, tape measure, and caulking gun. In
next weeks article,we will discuss the replacement of wood sash
windows.

How to Select and Care for Crystal Barware

Filed under: Home Improvement Management @ 7:27 am

Shopping for the right crystal barware doesn’t have to be
overwhelming. Crystal for the bar comes in many different shapes
and sizes, and each has a particular purpose. Knowing which
pieces are right for your needs, and knowing how to care for
your crystal properly, will help you acquire and maintain the
perfect set of barware. Just follow these simple steps. Before
you buy:

1. Select a variety of drinking glasses As a rule I recommend
buying enough glasses to match the number of your fine china and
flatware settings. However, if you want to save and buy fewer of
the items you don’t expect to use as much, or if you think
you’ll need more of another item, breaking this rule makes
sense. Know a lot of wine drinkers? You may want to concentrate
on wine glasses and stemware and build a good collection of
these. Are your friends more likely to drink a beer than have a
shot? Concentrate on beer mugs, steins, and pilsner glasses and
cut back on shot glasses. Correctly anticipating your barware
needs will enable you to spend more efficiently and have the
right pieces on hand for any occasion.

2. Choose the right serving vessels It will be important to have
a variety of serving vessels to properly present all the drinks
you want to serve. Carafes for wine, decanters for liquor,
pitchers for non-alcoholic drinks, and water sets will look
elegant in crystal. Impress your guests by serving from crystal
containers rather than the bottle.

3. Don’t forget the ice bucket When you’re entertaining, a
crystal ice bucket placed on the bar adds an elegant touch to
your presentation.

4. Personalize it Want your barware to stand apart from the
rest? Personalize it by etching your initials, monogram, or name
on the crystal to make your collection truly unique. Personalize
your entire set to make each piece special, or personalize just
your serving vessels and ice bucket. (A personalized pitcher,
ice bucket, or set of wine glasses will also make a great gift!)

After you’ve bought your barware:

5. Pay attention to temperature Crystal is very sensitive to
temperature changes. Always pour warm beverages into a glass
that has been warmed, and put ice and cold beverages in glasses
that have been chilled.

6. Clean it properly Glassware is delicate and requires special
care. Wash it with warm water and a small amount of detergent
then rinse with cold water. Polish your glassware with a
lint-free cloth, and be careful not to leave fingerprints when
serving. If you have softened water don’t put your crystal in
the dishwasher. The softened water will permanently etch the
crystal with cloudy marks.

7. Store it right side up Crystal’s delicate edges can be
damaged if hung upside down. Always store your crystal barware
right side up.

Filed under: Home Improvement Management @ 10:56 pm

Lighting in the home serves two important purposes. Firstly it has a job to do lighting up the area it serves. Today though, lighting not only has to be functional, but it has to be stylish and add something to the home decor. The days of buying just any old light are gone, lights must add to the home.

Don’t Over-Do the Theme

I was reading an article today about kid’s bedrooms and how parents can tend to go overboard on a bedroom theme. I think it’s important to create a space for kids that speaks to their interests, but also allows for the freedom be individuals at the same time.

Say your son loves airplanes. You decide it would be nice to do an airplane-themed bedroom. Your intentions are good, but after you add the airplane rug, airplane curtains, airplane pillows, airplane wallpaper, and 10 model airplanes on the ceiling, the room looks like more of an eyesore than a cozy bedroom.

Instead, opt for some nice airplane bedding, and paint the walls a complimentary color. Add a model airplane and some wall art if you wish, but let it stop there. Your son needs to be able to express himself in more ways than one, and by giving him some breathing room in the way of “theme” you will allow him to be creative by having a less cluttered look to his room.

Likewise if your daughter loves the color yellow, don’t do her bedroom in top-to-bottom yellow. Rather focus on some nice yellow bedding and paint the walls a contrasting color. This will make her favorite color pop out instead of fading into a monochromatic sea of yellow walls, curtains, bedding, and carpeting.
