Tactics For Trophy Chain Pickerel

Filed under: Baiting @ 7:59 pm

Chain Pickerel,(Esox Niger), are a formidable gamefish, that are actively pursued by some, and despised by others!

Chain Pickerel can be found throughout the Northeast, and down to Florida. In some areas, these are prized as trophies that deserve the same respect as a big largemouth bass, in other areas, such as in Florida, many anglers consider them nothing more than a nuisance.

Many inexperienced anglers mistake this fish for a Northern pike, but there are distinct differences in these two species. The Chain Pickerel is distinguished by it’s chain like pattern along it’s body. The Chain Pickerel doesn’t reach the same proportions as its counterpart, the Northern Pike. Most Chain Pickerel are considered large when they reach 3-4 pounds. A true “TROPHY,” is anything above the 4 pound mark. The state record for Chain Pickerel in most states is between 6 and 8 pounds. Each year, in the spring, fall, and winter, large specimens are caught that are in the 4-5 pound range on average, but very few giants over 6 pounds are caught at any time of the year. The Chain Pickerel actually hit the best in the winter and early spring, and start their spawning process as water temperatures climb into the 40’s. Unlike most other species, they don’t make beds, and they deposit their eggs on strands of vegetation, sometimes mixed with sticks, and other structure. They don’t defend their young either, they deposit the eggs and move on, devouring their own young soon after they hatch.

LOCATIONS AND TACTICS:

Chain Pickerel hit well in the winter months, and even through the ice. They usually cruise the same areas as other gamefish such as largemouth bass, crappies, yellow perch, and other panfish.

Pickerel will savagely attack schools of baitfish, or individuals, whatever is the easiest prey at the time. I have caught Chain Pickerel with Catfish lodged in their mouths that were too large to swallow, and they still were attacking other baits. I have even found Chain Pickerel laying dead or dying, on the surface with huge bluegills stuck in their mouths, yet at other times, only want a small bait on or near the bottom.

The best locations for Chain Pickerel in the winter is along points, with drop-offs near deeper water, and areas that contain some underwater cover and vegetation nearby. They will be shallow at times, even in very cold water, but are always near the baitfish, and deeper water escape routes. They can be found by deep water brushpiles also, due to the fact that these same areas hold other types of prey, and panfish, thus the pickerel aren’t far away.

Contrary to popular belief, Chain Pickerel can be caught in the dark, but this is more of a rare occurrence than a standard rule of thumb. In the early spring, many of the pickerel will be in water near the shoreline, and emerging grasses, and other vegetation, gorging on baitfish, and preparing to spawn. They can be in water as shallow as a few inches, to a couple of feet. The easiest way to catch chain pickerel is on live bait. They like medium to large shiners, and big minnows. This has always been a standard fare for pickerel. There are other methods though that will take real “Trophies,” and not so many of the more common 2-3 pounders.

The best way to catch larger chain pickerel is to use a small jig such as a shad dart, in yellow/red, or yellow/white combinations, in a 1/64 ounce size, up to about an 1/8 ounce. These are really small baits, and a lot of finesse is required to catch chains on these lures. The other bait that works well is a 1/16 to 1/4 ounce brown or brown/black hair jig. Both these jigs should be used first without any other bait, such as minnows attached to them.

You first need to find the areas that will hold the pickerel; drop-offs, near points, humps, vegetation, and other cover. You should rig this jig on 4-6 pound test line. This is what makes the lure have the correct action and depth that trigger some of the bigger fish. It is the same principle as smallmouth fisherman use on Pickwick. They use 6 pound test line, not because the fish can see it, but because it allows the lure to maintain the proper fall, depth, and action, that catch the larger fish.

I like to rig two rods, with a shad dart on one, and a hair jig on the other. I start by letting out about a hundred feet of line, and slowly trolling these baits in wide, 360 degree circles over the chosen areas. You will pick up leaves and grass if you’re doing it right, if you don’t. slow down. The majority of strikes will feel like nothing more than grass or leaves on the lure, but most of time it’s a big Chain Pickerel!

I can’t overemphasize the importance of watching the line! If the line moves, or does ANYTHING, that it hasn’t been doing, then set the hook. You can’t set the hook the same way you do with a bass. It takes a slower short snap in the wrist, while reeling the line up tight, and applying just the right amount of pressure. The drag setting is critical, since you are using such light line, and light equipment.

Most of the time, I take the anti-reverse off, and backreel. They will make some long runs and head to the deeper water on the bottom, and try to wrap you up in the trolling motor, and break you off under the boat as they get close. The only way to get good at landing them, is to catch them. Practice is the only way to get a feel for landing them on this light equipment. If you don’t get any takers after working 2 or 3 of your best areas, then add a small minnow to the back of the lures, but go to a 1/8 or 1/4 ounce, in brown/orange or lime green.

Troll them the same way in these areas again, while casting another rod to search the areas, and impart more action to the bait to try to develop a pattern that they want that day. Pickerel are ferocious one day, and finicky the next. They are unpredictable sometimes, so don’t give up. On a good day, I have caught 5-7 Chain Pickerel that were all over 4 pounds, and usually 2 or 3 over 5 pounds. I have caught others in some Delaware and New Jersey Lakes, that exceeded 6 pounds. I caught a Chain Pickerel in 2000, that won the Delaware State Sportfishing Tournament for the year, that was 6 pounds, 14 ounces, just a few ounces short of the state record!

EQUIPMENT:

You need 3 or 4 spinning rods for these tactics, in the 5 and 5 1/2 foot range, ultra-light to light action, with a good degree of sensitivity. I like G.Loomis rods, but there are other good light action rods you can use for this as well. They should be paired with a good reel, such as a Shimano or Daiwa, with a great drag, set lightly. But as I mentioned before, backreeling, with the anti-reverse off, is really the best way. I use Stren line in 4-6 pound test for this, as it gives the lures the proper action, and depth. Recently though, I have experimented with some superlines with good results.

BEST LOCATIONS:

Here in the Northeast, (Delaware, New Jersey, and New York), in particular, some of the places that hold the largest chain pickerel are Horsey’s Pond, in Lower Delaware, Killens Pond in Dover, and the Nanticoke River, (Broad Creek), in Seaford.

In New York I like Lake Champlain, and in New Jersey, Farrington, Union, Assunpink, and Hopetcong, are among some of the better lakes, although there are many more that produce big chains as well. Employ some of these tactics this winter and in the spring on some of these lakes and I think you will be surprised at the results. You won’t catch as many pickerel using some of these methods, but they will be BIG!

The Potato Patch [A Poem: In Spanish And English]

Filed under: Beaux Arts @ 2:12 pm

The Potato Patch

One day—oh, I suppose I was, say ten,

I asked my mother to ask my grandfather

For a garden plot—, somewhere in our

Backyard:

And somehow, she got him to agree—;

Twisted his knees, perhaps—I don’t

Know—but the Old Russian Bear

Was hard to please…!

It wasn’t a garden to plow or hoe,

Just a patch, a little plot in the backyard

By the fence: that’s all.

And there I planted my first garden—

Potatoes….

It was kind of neat (so I thought), hidden

From anyone passing by; until I found out

Potatoes grow underground—

(not on top), and yes, it was

A mess, thereafter: digging, weeding,

Watering.

It seemed the season would never end,

But I did stick with it; and then came the

Day, the great day, to pluck those

Potatoes from their abode, and to show

Them to my mother and grandpa:

I was quite proud.

And when I did, when I pulled those

(roots and all) potatoes—from

Under the earth, I was devastated to

To find out: the eyes were bigger

Than the potatoes.

Traumatic I took it at first, I think

I even cursed

Advice? I have none, but I’ll tell you,

I never tried to grow potatoes again.

A mi madre y mi abuelo:

Yo estaba casi orgulloso.

¿Consejo? No tengo ninguno, pero yo te diré,

Yo jamás trate de cultivar patatas nuevamente.

If you are a beginner of Flash files and you want to convert your video files to SWF files to play them on the Internet, Video to Flash Encoder will be a good choice. It has a very easy interface and allows you to preview the main settings you have done. Macromedia Flash Video Encoder cannot create SWF files. SwishVideo and On2 Flix are both complicated for beginners.

If you only want to convert a video file to a SWF file, SwishVideo, Video to Flash Encoder and On2 Flix are all fine. However, if you want good quality and small file size, Video to Flash Encoder will be the best choice.

If you want to convert your video files to FLV files and you prefer On2 VP6 conversion, Macromedia Flash Video Encoder, Video to Flash Encoder, and On2 Flix all work well for you.

If you are a professional Flash designer and you need to add Cue Point to your Flash files, you should choose Macromedia Flash 8 Video Encoder. It was released together with Flash 8 Professional by the Macromedia company. If you have already bought Flash 8 Professional, you should have got Macromedia Flash 8 Video Encoder along with it.

7 Simple Ways to Increase Your Credit Card Limit

Filed under: Great Mathematics Tips @ 10:48 am

There are many people right now who would like to have a higher credit card limit.

The obvious reason for this, is that a higher credit card limit enables the purchase of otherwise unaffordable merchandise and services.

First and foremost, if you want to successfully increase your credit card limit, you need to remember that to get a higher credit card limit, you must abide by the terms and conditions of the Credit Card Company or bank.

Below are 7 other ways you can get a higher credit card limit.

• The most important thing to do for getting a higher credit card limit is to prove your credit worthiness. This is the first thing that banks and credit cards companies look for when giving a higher credit limit.

• Attract positive attention from the Credit Card Company or bank by paying finance charges once in a while. Obviously, this is not advisable on a repeating basis and should only be used as a last resort to increase your chances of getting a higher credit limit.

Proving to credit card companies and banks that you are good “borrower” can be a convincing way to get a higher credit limit. But be careful because this strategy also means that you will be paying finance charges, which can accumulate in a hurry.

And always remember, a higher credit card limit means greater purchasing power, but it also increases the risk of your having to pay greater interest charges and other processing and late fees.

• Always spend within your credit card limit because doing so means that you are capable of controlling your expenses.

• Use your credit cards regularly. Don’t keep your cards for emergency use only. If you use your credit cards sparingly, banks and credit card companies will be unable to understand your spending and payback behaviour.

Under these circumstances, most banks and credit card companies will be reluctant to give you a higher credit card limit.

• Never make minimum payments. Instead, try to pay for the entire outstanding amount. This will usually give you a better chance of getting a higher credit card limit.

• Avoid late payments as much as possible. Not only will your increase payment increase, but you may also have to pay an additional fine for not clearing bills on time. This will also dim your chances of getting a higher credit card limit.

• The best and simplest strategy for getting a higher credit card limit is to use your credit card wisely. Always keep in mind that credit card companies keep a record of your transactions and payment patterns, so always pay on time.

The bottom line is that your performance in the records of banks and credit card companies will determine whether you’ll get a higher credit card limit or not.

Sea Change in Australia - Leading to increased soil acidity

Filed under: Online Science Resources @ 3:24 am

SEA CHANGE
Australia’s love of coastal living is leading to some serious environmental problems, as more and more Australians are choosing to build along coastal areas. This is leading to the leaching of acid soils, which is degrading our coastline, marine life and infra-structure.
Australian coastal soils have a high Pyrite content and when disturbed through excavation and construction is leading to the natural production of sulphuric acid, which is then washed down to the rivers and sea causing heavy environmental damage.
What is Pyrite?
Pyrite (FeS2) is a common mineral found in soils around the coast of Australia. It is brass yellow in colour and has a metallic lustre. In industry, Pyrite is used to manufacture sulphuric acid (H2S04), which is widely used in the production of fertilisers, steel, explosives and petrochemicals.
In soil Pyrite is relatively benign, but when disturbed and exposed, it reacts with oxygen and water in the environment to produce sulphuric acid.
•One tonne of pyrite gives 1.6 tonnes of sulphuric acid.
How much Pyrite do we have?
Australia has some 40,000 sq km of coastline and CSIRO research has estimated there is one billion tonnes of pyrite in Australia’s coastal soils, potentially leading to serious environmental degradation in the near future as our coasts are opened up to more and more development
What are the effects of sulphuric acid on the environment?
Sulphuric acid is toxic to aquatic life and organisms and can destroy infrastructure leading to costly repairs. It is known to:
•Kill fish;
•Release potentially dangerous arsenic and aluminium in shellfish such as oysters, which are later consumed;
•Eat away at concrete bridges, structures and footings;
•Eat away at road structures and steel structures such as bridge pylons.
What are we doing to fix the problem?
•The CSIRO are undertaking studies to map where the reactive soils occur. They are determining what are the properties of the soil, then mapping key “hotspots”.
•Some State Governments are putting planning policies in place to limit the development of these key sensitive areas.
•Where the damage has already occurred, state governments are rehabilitating the soils and the environment, which is extremely costly.

Government Policies
Victoria, Queensland, NSW and South Australia have government planning policies in place.
•The South Australian Government has only put in place limited “fringe” policy and needs to address the issue on a broader scale.
•In West Australia, Northern Territory and Tasmania no such policies exist.
As an island country, it is imperative that these planning policies are introduced in key sensitive areas.
Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation is a large task and already in parts of Cairns and South Australia, small areas are costing millions of dollars to repair.

Colorful Talk

“I heard what you said, Red.

Yet, I have to disagree.
There’s nothing wrong with my voice,
You’re just filled with jealousy.”

“You just don’t understand, Tan.
Let me alleviate your fears.
It’s not about how well you sing,
But can you inspire listening ears?”

“What do you think, Pink?
Am I right or am I wrong?”
“I’m not really sure, my friend,
I have not heard the song.”

“Well, what about you, Blue?
Are your thoughts the same as mine?”
“To tell the honest truth, dear Red
I must hear it one more time.”

“Anything you want to say, Gray?”
“Yes, I don’t like what you’re discussing.
A hymn should soothe the troubled soul,
Not arouse this senseless fussing.”

“Wait just a minute fellow,” said Yellow.
“You’re going a bit too far.
After all, we’re engaged in tête-à-tête
Which is not so irregular.”

“Don’t think I’m being mean,” said Green.
“But a hymn is a sacred thing.
Though Tan does try his very best,
He really cannot sing.”

“I don’t think you’re right,” said White.
“To me Tan sings quite well.
Just take the time to listen
You’ll hear God’s word prevail.”

“Colors, colors, calm down,” cried Brown.
“Lest we inadvertently enrage
Each other to colorful battle…”
“Which would ruin us,” interrupted Beige.

“Now that is pretty bold,” said Gold
But true I must confess.”
“Anyone for gum?” inquired Plum
Looking pale and colorless.

“Sshhhh, the author is back,” whispered Black.
“Let’s table our concern.
We’ll pick up where we left off
When sunset once more return.”

Playing in The Game of Love

Filed under: Universe Of Relationships @ 6:03 pm

A good friend of mine recently said, “but I do love him.”

“Then why are you willing to accept being angry at him, instead of working to resolve the issue?” I asked.

The him, was her husband and our conversation was about how we choose to be in the state we are in. How we choose to love, or not to love, to be angry or not to be angry, but that it is our choice, consciously, or unconsciously.

Although not convinced about the control she had on this, I kept pressing. “So why choose anger?”

“Because I’m tired of constantly trying, only to get rejected.”

Still hearing her skepticism about choice, I said, “If you don’t control your emotions, who does?”

I stopped questioning her at that point, because I could hear the pain in her voice, which only minutes before stood as anger. Having been through a similar situation in my own marriage of 14 years, I felt her pain as if it were mine…perhaps because it truly was. I listened as she said she hadn’t stopped loving him, but in my eyes, I felt that for the minute, she surely had. She had made a conscious effort to stop loving her husband as a direct result of his rejections. Even if indirectly, it was payback time.

But who was really paying the price? She felt the daily rejections of him not listening to her and of him not being intimate, but now it was his turn to feel unloved. Wasn’t that how this game was played? It was one option, but one that she would pay the price for, even as she withheld the love. She would then hold the reigns, but still walk away feeling unloved.

After leaving a marriage that left me with similar feelings, I left the conversation with a pain in my heart. The pain from knowing exactly how it felt to be denied a love that I could almost taste. The pain from constantly exposing myself, only to be left feeling bruised and beaten from the silence. The pain of trying to peel away each layer of my skin, hoping for my true self to be revealed and loved. And the ultimate pain, in not knowing if it would ever end.

The most difficult decision I ever made was to leave my husband after fourteen years and to give up my dreams of a happily ever after ending, but one that had to come. You see, my marriage differed from my friends in one very important way. I never stopped loving my husband, because I was the eternal optimist, and believed that eventually he would hear me. I believed that if I kept putting myself out there, that one day he would finally cave in and love me like I needed. It wasn’t until the day I realized that he could only love the way he knew how, that I knew I had to leave. I didn’t know how long I had been giving and feeling unloved, but it was very clear that I was becoming a person that almost didn’t feel anymore.

Faced with being a single parent, trying to start a business of my own, create a life for my children that enabled them to see my true self and learning how to expose myself to the cruel world of dating, I never once looked back. I couldn’t choose that. I couldn’t, because who I needed to be was someone who was feeling and this was where I needed to be.
Dating, after being married for fourteen years, will help you experience the raw feelings of being exposed and vulnerable all over again, with a huge range of emotions. The difference is that I know there is an end in sight.

“Just be cautious,” my sister pleaded after hearing about one of my better dates.

I resisted my usual urge to defend myself. “There is no cautious in the game of love,” I said. “This time I am looking for someone who knows the real me, right from the start. And if throwing caution to the wind from day one, means I may experience sadness…than so be it…because playing full out is the only way to play. And if I get hurt, at least I will know that I feel. And if I feel, at least I will know I am alive.

So this spring, why not experience Spring Fever with a real spring in your step? Play full out…love like your heart tells you to. You may be surprised at the happiness that comes with it.

How to Wipe a Country Off the Map

Filed under: Miscellany @ 2:01 pm

Well no one has yet written a book on how to wipe a country off the map, but we know at least one country that wants too. That country is Iran and they are dead (emphasized word) set on building a nuclear weapon to do just that, even if they haven’t the time to write the book. The country they want to wipe off the map is Israel. Of course if Iran cannot wipe them off the map today they will settle for funding Hamas, the International Terrorist Party now running no mans land, Palestinian section of Jordan. If that is international terrorism at its finest, I do not know what is.

You see not only does Iran want to make nuclear weapons they have already threatened to use them as soon as they do on Israel. Meanwhile Iran is sending insurgents into Iraq to destabilize that fledgling Democracy. How can the world accept such behavior without action and what is taking the world so long to respond to this once nuisance now gone mad?

So, how do you wipe a country off the map? Well it is quite easy, you simply allow nut cases and supporters of international terrorists to build nuclear weapons and put the nuclear warheads on top of 36 foot tall ICBMs which Iran has. You simply ignore the warning signs, threats and gathering of Weapons of Mass Destruction. This my friends is how you blow an entire nation off the map. You sit idle and do nothing. Consider this in 2006.

Although Apple had nothing to do with the podcasting technology, the iPod and podcasting quickly became linked. With the advent of the iPod Video, podcasting entered a whole new level. Now, more than the usual audio broadcasts, aspiring film makers can also share their work with the world.

So how do you go about making your own video podcast? To make it easier on you, use a digital video camera. If you have an analog video camera, it is still possible to convert the footage to digital format but it adds another step to the process. So assuming you have a digital video camera, what do you do?

First, take great footage. Of course, making a film is not simply shooting. Create a concept and make it good. When you have finalized your ideas, it is time to shoot. When taking your shots, bear in mind your target media – the iPod. The small screen will not be able to display too many details so it is a good idea to get close when shooting. Do not use the wide-screen mode but use the standard mode instead. Optimize bandwidth and battery power by shooting several short segments instead of one full-length film. Edit! Small screen viewing will not show text clearly unless they are large enough. Also bear in mind that fast motion and high contrast might not show very clearly on the small screen.

Now that you have your video, it’s time to compress it. This needs to be done so that the video will be optimized for web and iPod viewing. There are different ways you can do this. If you have a MAC, it’s no big deal. You can compress and export your video using iMovie HD6 simply by clicking the following: FILE>Export>iPod>Share. It’s as easy as that – the software automatically converts the file and shares it on iTunes. For PC users, you can also use QuickTime Pro, version 7.0.3 or higher. Again, simply click Export > Using Quick Time Conversion. The resulting *.m4v file is the one you will upload to your web server. Other options are Sorenson Squeeze and Spasm Software’s Podner.

Describe or tag your movie. This is very important as all the information you supply will be the basis of searching later on. This is how your movie can be found and singled out, out of all the video podcasts out there. If you’re using the latest iMovie version, all you need to do is drag the file onto iTunes and click the Info Tab. Then enter the necessary information. You can also change the filename. For PC users, create an XML document. You can find a sample XML file at http://playlistmag.com/features/200…dcast/index.php. Just change the details to suit your movie. When this is done, all you need to do it upload your file to your web server.

Now what? Distribute! Let people know that your video podcast exists. You can do this in a variety of ways. To reach as many people as possible, submit your podcast to iTunes. You can also provide a URL for your podcast by including it in your blog. First create an RSS feed (www.feedburner.com is a good one) so that you can attach your video to your blog. Then create an entry in your blog and then place a link to your video. Of course, if you really want people to notice your work, you have to promote it. Go to websites such as www.podcastalley.com Now wait for the world to discover the budding film maker in you.
